Cloudflare for SaaS pricing looks almost free at a glance — 100 hostnames free, then ten cents each — but the sticker is not the whole bill. Here is the real cost at 100, 1,000, and 10,000 custom hostnames, and where it wins or loses. Dated July 2026.
Verify current pricing on Cloudflare's site before deciding — plan structure and per-hostname rates change.
The published numbers
- First 100 custom hostnames: free.
- Beyond 100: $0.10 per custom hostname / month.
- Plus a base plan: the custom-hostname add-on sits on top of your Cloudflare plan (Pro/Business/Enterprise). Some features (advanced isolation, higher limits, certain WAF controls) are gated to Business or Enterprise.
The real cost at scale
Hostname fees only (excluding your base plan, bandwidth, and Enterprise features):
100 hostnames -> $0/mo (within free allotment)
1,000 hostnames -> ~$90/mo (900 x $0.10)
10,000 hostnames -> ~$990/mo (9,900 x $0.10)Add your base plan on top. A Pro plan is modest; if you need Business or Enterprise for isolation, WAF, or support SLAs, that is where the number moves — often far more than the hostname fees themselves. The hostname line item is rarely what decides Cloudflare for SaaS economics; the plan tier is.
Where it wins
- You are already all-in on Cloudflare — same edge, same dashboard, one vendor.
- You want Cloudflare's WAF, caching, and DDoS posture on customer hostnames for free (relatively).
- Your volume sits comfortably under the free 100 (early stage).
Where it loses
- Provider independence: you run on Cloudflare's edge, in front of Cloudflare, by design. Multi-CDN or portability is not the model.
- Feature gating: per-tenant isolation and a support-friendly dashboard can push you to Enterprise.
- Effective cost with Enterprise: once an Enterprise contract is in play, “$0.10/hostname” stops being the headline.
Compared to the alternatives
At $0.10/hostname the per-domain rate is competitive; cnames.dev is ~$0.05/domain at 1,000 ($49/mo per 1,000) with provider independence and per-tenant isolation without an Enterprise contract. The right answer depends on whether you value being on Cloudflare's edge or being free of it.
